The ZKM | Institute for Music and Acoustics (IMA) presents a DVD publication documenting the realization process and the world premiere of Karlheinz Stockhausen's composition "Strahlen". "Rays" is a version for drummer and ten-channel sound recording of "High Times of Sunday" from the opera cycle "Light".

Commissioned by the ZKM | Center for Art and Media Technology, the work premiered in 2009 by LászlóHudacsek (vibraphone) and Kathinka Pasveer (sound direction). The collaboration between the ZKM and Karlheinz Stockhausen began in 2003. At first, the ideas of Stockhausen were analyzed in detail in order to develop technical procedures for the realization of the composition. From the score and extensive correspondence, it became clear that Stockhausen had precise sound ideas in every detail. In order to do justice to these ideas, u. a. sampled the entire tone palette of a vibraphone in different volumes with a certain number of mallets, resulting in a sample library of about 2000 vibraphone sounds.

The documentary illustrates in an interesting way the high complexity of the production process. In order to depict the ten-channel composition of Stockhausen with their spatial information on a DVD, special techniques had to be used. For this purpose, they experimented with different spatial sound formats: in a binaural recording with artificial head, the acoustic properties of the performance space are included; Using a head-related transfer function (HRTF), listening to headphones creates the impression of a "surround environment" within an ideal space; a third version, in which the ten voices have been mixed together in five channels, enables a differentiated listening experience with a 5.1 sound system.

In addition, the DVD includes an exclusive conversation that Ludger Brümmer has led as director of the IMA with Karlheinz Stockhausen.
