Four Verses for Timpani by Murray Houllif will stretch the abilities of most timpanists, demanding quite a lot of pedaling, hand-to-hand independence, and a very strong sense of pulse.

The first verse, Ode, features an active melody over a bass line with a great deal o f pedaling and some complicated rhythms. Dactyl introduces the use of fingers and brushes, while Song requires all four drums be played at once.

The final verse, Free, is 'the drummy movement' involving quick drum-to-drum motions and extreme dynamic shifts.

This piece is quite engaging and artistic as timpani solos go, showcasing a lot of different abilities from the performer. It's an excellent choice when it comes time to play a solo on this instrument.
