"Søren Monrad's a piece for Snare Drum is rudimental in style but not "traditional" as a composition. It is both challenging and musical, requiring a well developed technique over a wide dynamic range. Well performed, this short etude will clearly demonstrate a performer's technique and musicality".

About the composer:

Søren Monrad was classically trained at the Royal Danish Conservatory of Music. In 1978 he became a percussionist with the Royal Danish Orchestra and in 1982 he won the chair as solo timpanist in the same orchestra. At the same time, he also held down jobs with the Collegium Musicum, Royal Danish Brass and others. Add to that a comprehensive international career as a solo percussionist, playing with among others the Royal Danish Orchestra and the Odense Symphony Orchestra.

He has also performed on several CD’s with the above mentioned ensembles on which composers such as Bartok, Crumb, Varese, Koppel and others are represented. Since 1985 he has been a lecturer at the Carl Nielsen Academy of Music in Odense, Denmark.

Pieza en dos movimientos, en los que cada uno hace una exploración en cuanto a nivel técnico, sonoro/timbrico y tipos de escrituras. Uno de ellos, esta enfocado a las características y exploración  del redoble y el otro en las características y exploración de los distintos tipos de mordentes. También se incluye en esta pieza cambios de compases, modulaciones métricas  y sobre todo musicalidad, mostrando así que estas piezas pueden usarse tanto a nivel de estudios de mejora, como piezas de concierto o recital. 

La duración de la pieza en movimientos separados y/o completa es:

In this challenging solo, several different contrasts in timbre are achieved by using the normal playing area as well as the rim area, the addition of "rim shots" and "stick shots" for aural punctuation, and the pitch bends, via changing the pressures on the drum head (Glissando), all contributing to make this an very interesting piece for study and performance.

In addition, the use of a wide range of dynamic levels in conjunction with numerous metric changes, and varied tempi, help set-up distinct "sectional" contrasts as well. 

The inclusion of a Cadenza section, with it's various suggestions for dynamics, rhythms and the varied use of buzz strokes and glissando - could really be "opened up" by a creative performer.

Overall this is a challenging solo for the player - yet is varied and interesting enough to hold a listener's attention as well - with the aural contrasts (sections) easily discernable.  This would make a great recital work for intermediate to advanced level performers.(ca. 8' 46")
