About the work:

The work is based on material derived from the melodic shape stated at the outset, and it evolves over the course of the three main sections in a series of gestures and episodes. The title alludes to a sense of the journey of the human spirit onward and upward, and this is occasionally inferred through the use of a recurring seven-note rhythmic figure.

Seven Steps is governed by alternating moods of calm and intensity, the latter coming to predominate as the work drives to a dramatic finish.
