A succession of tones, sounds or noises is comprehensible as rhythm if ratios and patterns are recognisable over time, from which a definite metre can be perceived.
In my experience, seemingly simple rhythms are in practice the more difficult ones, since they are more easily recognised and so any imprecision is much more easily noticed. But even the most complex of rhythms are always just a combination of the same three elements.
