Sometimes, things in musical life just come together perfectly in an almost “heavenly” manner. One day, I found an email in my in-box from Christian Schröder, the organizer of the concert series “Jazz im Himmelreich”, or Jazz in Heaven (LBS Münster). He wanted to know if I had “something with accordion“ on tap. Actually, I did not, but the query did get my idea engine going and I remembered that a few weeks earlier I had been profoundly impressed by an accordionist named Cezary Paciorek at a concert by the band of the Polish clarinetist Emil Kowalsky, who, alas, has died in the meantime. I contacted him and told him about the query from Münster and my idea of a collaboration. He showed a great deal of interest and had some time as well (which is often a problem). All that was missing was a rhythm section. I found it in two outstanding young musicians. The first was Thomas Hempel, who also resides in Oldenburg, a percussionist whom I have long held in high esteem, and whom I always considered a potential candidate for cooperation. The other was Oliver Karstens, whose earthy and sensitive bass-playing always thrilled me whenever I had the pleasure to play with him. So the band was complete. We then selected the material, and sent out the sheet music and the MP-3 files and we met a day before the concert for our (one and only!) practice session. And after the first few bars, it was obvious that everything thought up beforehand was bearing fruit, indeed, one could say with certainty that all expectations were exceeded by far. As of that moment, it was pure joy! The concert became a “heavenly” pleasure, thanks to a great band, a super audience and Christian Schröder’s perfect organization. That’s what “Jazz in Heaven” should be like. Listen and convince yourself!
