Georg Edlinger Percussionist, Drummer und Instructor präsentiert mit seiner Solo CD „Percussion Beyond the Timelines“ verschiedene traditionelle und eigene Percussionstücke. Die Grundlage für die Stücke geben verschiedene rhythmische Clavelinien auch Timelines genannt. Bei manchen Stücken kann man auch mit seinen Percussioninstrumenten mitspielen. Manchmal werden auch elektronische Mittel mit gängigen Percussioninstrumenten und Alltagsgegenständen vermischt und darüber improvisiert. Als Gäste lud er sich aus einer Griotfamilie stammende Berufsmusiker aus Senegal Mame Birane Mboup und Ibou Nga Ba ein, die bei manchen Stücken zu hören sind.

geboren und aufgewachsen in Bombay und heute in der Nähe von Hamburg heimisch, handelt es sich bei Trilok Gurtu um einen der ganz Großen in der Musik. Einige Top-Alben produzierte der Percussionist in den vergangenen Jahren, dann wurde es ruhiger um ihn. Doch jetzt meldet er sich mit neuer CD (und Tour im Oktober) eindrucksvoll zurück.

Die Songs auf „Massical“ wirken wie ein akustisches Balsam. Als Hörer vergisst man alles, was man je über Musik gelernt hat, befreit sich unweigerlich von allen Vorurteilen und gibt sich gelöst einem Fluß hin, der das Gold der Jahrtausende durch die Gegenwart in die Zukunft hinauszutreiben scheint. Um dieses Gefühl glaubhaft zu transportieren, musste Gurtu selbst viel Ballast abwerfen. Er ist ein unglaublicher Virtuose, der früher zuweilen auch mal dazu neigte, zu viel zu spielen. Auf „Massical“ ist Virtuosität jedoch nur noch zweitrangig und ordnet sich funktional in den musikalischen Prozess ein.

„Es geht ja nicht um einen Showcase für mich selbst“, bestätigt Gurtu. „Wenn die Musik keine Virtuosität braucht, setze ich sie auch nicht ein. Aber es gibt natürlich Stücke, die unheimlich schwer zu spielen sind. Die meisten Musiker könnten das gar nicht spielen. Die Musik ist virtuos, klingt aber simpel. Wenn Musiker ihre erste oder zweite Platte machen, featuren sie vor allem ihr Instrument. Ich will aber meine Musik featuren. Das ist ein Unterschied. Viel wichtiger als Virtuosität ist der Groove.“
