1999 vier junge Schlagzeugstudenten vom Tiroler Landeskonservatorium in
Carmen (2019) - 47'27 Min.; Bizet: Carmen Suite for 4 Marimbas; Ed Sheeran: Perfect for 4 Marimbas; Sting: Message in a Bottle for 4 Marimbas; Suzanne Vega: Gypsy for 4 Marimbas; Dorman: Udakrep Akubrad for Marimbas and Percussion; Wave Quartet, Marimbas and Percussion (Christoph Sietzen, Bogdan Bacanu, Emiko Uchiyama, Nico Gerstmayer)
The Wave Quartet succeeds again and again in making familiar sounds sound completely new and interesting. For example, the ensemble has made its Sony Classical debut with the harpsichord concertos by Johann Sebastian Bach in its own arrangement for marimba ensemble and orchestra
"Musically, this new recording has a number of charms to offer (...), enchanting, enchanting, meditative, time-consuming.
The
conciseness with which the Wave Quartet plays is certainly one of its special qualities.
" (Fono Forum)
The Wave Quartet's second album now focuses on perhaps the most popular female figure in opera history. It's the "Carmen" from Georges Bizet's world hit of the same name. Almost a century later, the Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin set up the highlights from Bizet's opera as a "Carmen Suite" for string orchestra and percussion. The Wave Quartet has now arranged this version for four marimbas. These 25-minute opera earwigs are followed by arrangements of pop hits by the ensemble. The ensemble has selected Ed Sheeran's "Perfect", Sting's "Message in a Bottle" and Suzanne Vega's "Gypsy". At least from the title Suzanne Vegas song "Gypsy" refers to the gypsy Carmen.
"
Udacrep Akubrad", a piece by the Israeli composer Avner Dorman, in an arrangement for three marimbas and percussion, concludes the
album
This mixture of opera, pop and a percussion classic arrangement reflects the musical self-image of the Wave Quartet, as Bogdan Bacanu emphasizes on behalf of his colleagues: "All people who like music are addressed. Our music is catchy! We act 'barrier-free' in this sense."
