Michel Cals (b. 1951) composed his Quatre Inventions for Percussion and Piano to be played in a competition at Paris Conservatoire. As an unusual, contemporary addition to the Percussion repertoire, this Cals piece is a must-play for percussionists wishing to broaden their style. The four pieces bear the name of their instrumentation; 1. Accessories and Vibraphone, 2. Xylo-Marimba, 3. Snare Drum and Drum Kit, and 4. Five Timpani. Exploiting Percussion to its full potential, Cals' Quatre Inventions is essential to the repertoire of advanced percussionists.

The title Frozen In Time refers to imaginary snapshots of the Earth’s geological development from prehistoric times to the present day. Each movement imagines the music of a large prehistoric continent at a certain point in time.

Frozen in Time Percussion Concerto (Piano Reduction) - 25 Min., advanced
Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra - Piano score only, no solo part
The title Frozen In Time refers to imaginary snapshots of the Earth's geological development from prehistoric times to the present day. Although we cannot be sure what the Earth looked like millions of years ago, most scientists agree that the separate continents used to be one mega-continent (as most agree that mankind descended from one prehistoric womb).
Martin Grubinger and the Harmburg Philharmonic, conducted by Simone Young, premiered the work in 2007 in Germany. Each movement imagines the music of a large prehistoric continent at a certain point in time: I. Indoafrica; II. Eurasia; III. The Americas — Avner Dorman
"Ruby" war ein Auftragswerk für
die BBC Proms 2003 und wurde auch vom Finalisten des Wettbewerbs "BBC
Young Musician of the Year 2004" gespielt. Es entstand in enger
Zusammenarbeit mit Colin Currie, seinem Widmungsträger und
ursprünglichen Solisten. Der Perkussionssatz steckt voller musikalischer
Raffinesse und beansprucht das technische Können des Solisten auf das
Höchste. "Duddell ist abstrakter Formulierung und melodischen
Instrumenten verbunden [ Seine Idee könnte man als 'transatlantisch'
bezeichnen. Michael Tippett ist ein deutlicher (und wunderbarer)
Einfluss in den 'kühlen' Strängen und der ergreifenden Lyrik." Colin

One of three works Duddell has written for percussionist Colin Currie, "Snowblind" highlights the melodic possibilities when writing for percussion. Throughout its three movements, Duddell takes the performers through a modern day Baroque sound-world with both the use of ritornello sections and focussing on unity between the accompaniment and soloist. "Snowblind" will stretch post Grade-8 students and is ideal for an exam or audition situation.
